On-board diagnostics (OBD) is an automotive term referring to a vehicle’s self-diagnostic and reporting capability. OBD systems give the vehicle owner or repair technician access to the status of the various vehicle sub-systems.

Vehicles that comply with the OBDII standards will have a data connector within about one meter of the driver’s position. If the location is not obvious, check the owner’s manual as many newer vehicles list the location there.

OBD II emissions related DTCs are from the powertrain and begin with P0xxx. P1xxx codes refer to manufacturer specific codes which often cover areas that are not emissions related and may not cause the check engine light to illuminate.
